Maybe you don't need to learn about survival clothing. Maybe you always hike with a spare jacket. Perhaps you never go out into the wilderness overnight, but just for day hikes. Or you bring lots of warm clothing when you do go backpacking.
Nonetheless, hundreds of people die or come close to dying every year from exposure. They thought they were prepared. They didn't expect their clothes to get wet from falling in a stream, they didn't think they'd be out there for the night, or they get lost for days.
Coming down from Mount Whitney I met several young men in t-shirts on their way up, determined to get to the top. They had no gear, and not enough time, but they probably made it there by sunset anyhow. They also certainly didn't make it the eleven miles back to their car before dark. It was below freezing that night, so I imagine they were uncomfortable at best.
Quick Survival Clothing
What survival clothing could they have made in that situation? One of them did have a light jacket. He could have used his t-shirt as a hat (a lot of heat is lost through the head) and filled his jacket with the fluff from the cattail seedheads for insulation. (Cattail down was once used to fill those old orange life preservers.)
Insulation is the important principle here. You can stuff a jacket, shirt, sweater or pants with dry leaves, milkweed down, bracken ferns or almost anything that creates a lot of "dead air space." It's better if you have two layers to sandwich it between, but being itchy is better than being frozen in any case.
In a jam, you can also use the flat leaves of cattail plants to weave a vest that will block the wind and some rain. Two bread bags full of milkweed down or other silky plant fibers make warm mittens (tie them at the wrists). A plastic bag full of the same could be tied onto your head as a hat.
Usually, you'll do better to look first at what you have, before looking to kill animals for their skins, or weave grass skirts. If you have a sleeping bag, it can double as a coat - just wrap it around you. Socks can be mittens, and garbage bags can be made into snow pants.
A garbage bag can also be a raincoat. Otherwise, tie bunches of grass tightly together along a string or strip of cloth, and then wrap it around your shoulders. This will repel a light rain. You can fashion a rain hood of birchbark as well.
In the desert you can make a sun-hat of large leaves, like those from a fan palm. String some together to wrap around your shoulders to prevent sunburn.
You'll probably never have to use animal skins for survival clothing. You might never lose your shoes and need to glue tree bark to your feet with pine sap, for hiking. Still, knowing how to improvise a few basic pieces of survival clothing can make you more comfortable, and possibly save your life.

Putting Together a Home Earthquake Kit
If you live in an area prone to seismic activity, it's vitally important that you have an earthquake kit in your house or in your car so that you'll have emergency supplies if you need them. Even if you don't live in an area that is prone to earthquakes, you might want to create a basic disaster survival kit to be used in case of tornados or other types of natural disasters.
Ideally, your earthquake kit should contain enough supplies for you and your family to survive for a period of up to three days. Beyond the basic considerations of food and water that are physically necessary for survival, you will also need a few additional items to help you make it through the aftermath of an earthquake.
One of the first things that you'll need is some sort of light source in case the electricity has been knocked out in your area. Since you're going to want to make sure that your light will work when needed, your best bet is to choose an LED flashlight or lantern since they have a drastically reduced energy usage and will keep a charge longer in storage than most standard flashlights. Test any LED flashlight that you have every few months to make sure that it still works, and if you're using an LED lantern that has multiple lighting modes then you should take the time to test every one of its modes.
Another essential piece of equipment is a multi-purpose tool that has knife blades, pliers, screwdrivers, and even saw blades and can openers in it. Be sure to store your multi-purpose tool with your LED lantern or LED flashlights so that you can find it quickly once you've located your light source. You'd be amazed at how useful a multi-purpose tool can be after an earthquake, and you may even find uses for it that you've never considered.
Also in your earthquake kit should be a fully-stocked first aid kit so that you can treat any injuries that might have occurred during the earthquake. Make sure that you have common items such as blankets, toilet paper, and hand sanitizer with your first aid kit so that you can cover basic needs and provide warmth and sanitation for anyone who is suffering from shock as well.
Other useful things to include in your earthquake kit include enough money or traveler's checks to be able to meet any monetary needs that you might have in case the banks are closed due to the earthquake. You should also have a safe with copies of any important documents that you don't want to be lost or damaged in an earthquake, as well as clean clothes for both warm and cold weather so that you and your family won't be forced to wear the same clothes for several days in a row.
Make sure that you check the expiration dates on any food or medicine that you keep in your earthquake kit, and change out any stored water that you have every few months. This will prevent you or your family members from getting sick due to expired food or stale water.
Preparing an earthquake kit is an important activity that should be done as a family to ensure that everyone knows how to use the items inside and where to find it if an earthquake occurs. Being prepared for a disaster may very well save a person's life.

PREPARE YOURSELF FOR WHATEVER COMES YOUR WAY
Disaster can strike quickly and without warning. It can force you to evacuate your neighborhood, workplace or school or can confine you to your home.
What would you do if basic services-water, gas, electricity or telephones-were cut off? Local officials and first responders will be on the scene after a disaster, but they cannot reach everyone right away. Therefore, the best way to make you and your family safer is to be prepared before disaster strikes.
Here are some tips for preparing for natural disasters:
** Get to know the types of disasters that can occur in your community.
** Make a family communications plan that includes an evacuation plan and coordinates with your school, work and community communication plans. Practice this plan with your entire family.
** Create a disaster supplies kit that includes enough supplies for each family member for at least three days. Remember to check your kit every six months.
** Make sure your child knows what smoke alarms, fire alarms and local community warning systems (horns, sirens) sound like and how to respond.
** Teach your child how and, equally important, when to call for help. Even very young children can be taught how and when to call for emergency assistance.
** Children should memorize their family name, address and phone number. They should also know where to meet in case of an emergency. Some children may not be old enough to memorize the information. They could carry a small index card that lists emergency information to give to an adult or babysitter.
** If you commute to work, make sure you know alternative routes and carry appropriate supplies, such as a disaster supplies kit in your car and a compact kit with bare essential items such as a flashlight and whistle on public transportation.
Being prepared helps you and your family minimize the impact of a disaster such as a hurricane or earthquake or an emergency such as a fire or a broken leg.
The Red Cross has tips and tactics to help you prepare. The time to get ready for unexpected situations is now-while you have time to plan.

prepare for a flood the best way you could
Believe it or not, floods are the natural disasters that are most common in America.
According to statistics, more than a hundred people are killed by floods every year. Also, more than four billion dollars are the cost damages caused by floods.
All this is according to the Red Cross of the United States.
The following are few tips and advice you could do in order to prepare yourself for any flood inevitability.
Expect the expected
It is important that you clearly understand and that you are aware of any damages that a flood could cause. Some of these inevitabilities include boulders that are rolling, trees that are ripped right out from the ground, buildings that are destroyed as well as bridges, sliding debris.
Do not be afraid to ask
It is also vital that you ask around your local zoning and planning office as to whether the property you are on is below the level of the flood or above it. Also, it is always good to know if the area you are in has had a history of being flooded.
This knowledge helps a lot in the preparation of activities and tasks to do in case if a flood does hit.
Familiarize yourself
In your own community, it is best that you familiarize yourself in any or all of the warning signals or signs whenever a flood does occur.
Learn, learn, learn
Know what are your community’s plan for evacuation. This helps you prepare yourself as well as your family and friends as on what to do as well as the step by step drill.
Have an insurance
It helps if you have insurance that is tailored particularly when a flood occurs. Believe it or not, the insurance usually associated with home owners will really not be able to reimburse any damages you may have that are caused by floods.
Keep all vital documents
These documents include any policies for insurance, passports, birth certificates, etc.
All these papers should – as much as possible – be kept in a box that is waterproof and one which could be accessed easily.
Move, move, move
If in case your fireplace, furnace, electricity panel or water heater is in the basement or 1st floor of your house, you could consider moving it up the attic.
In that way it will be a lot less probable for these to be damaged by raging floodwaters.
Plug it all
Plugging all trap sewers you have in your house using check valves actually prevent any floodwater from going into the drains of your house. During emergencies, using large stoppers or corks is also a good idea to plug tubs and sinks.
Check and build
Checking with the local codes of buildings is a good idea as this will let you know whether it is okay to build walls for floods and to be used as barriers around your own house in order to prevent any floodwater from getting in your premises.
Waterproof it all
In order to protect walls of basements, seal them using waterproof compounds so that floodwaters would be unable to get in through any cracks.
Have a radio and some supplies
As much as possible, keep a radio that is operated by batteries if in case the power goes off.
Having supplies such as canned goods is a must as well as first aid kits. Do not forget a can opener of course.
All in all, preparation is always the best defence against floods.

IS THE END NEAR?
During the past year, hundreds of thousands have perished at the hands of a mother nature run amok. Tsunamis, hurricanes, earthquakes, and torrential rains have served us notice that for all our brilliant achievements, we are not masters of the earth.
Those who adhere to the prophecies of the past suggest that the cataclysm of world destruction is coming, that the rapture is at hand, the end is near.
Certainly, the recent natural disasters have been extreme, eclipsing anything in living memory, but do they signify a terrible end?
The human race is now enormous, exceeding by a thousand percent the world inhabitants of the not-too-distant past. Communication is instantaneous: a boulder falls on a house and a picture is flashed around the world before the dust settles.
Consider the news in historical context, a far vaster landscape than human memory. And consider that until 100 years ago, news of events traveled slowly, if at all.
The earthquake in Kashmir claimed perhaps 40,000 valuable lives out of a planetary population of 6.4 billion souls. An earthquake in Shaanxi, China in 1556 claimed over 800,000 lives out of a contemporary population of only a few million, most of them totally unaware of the disaster.
The horrors of AIDS and the looming threat of 'flu pandemics may kill a few million of us. In 1347-1350, the Black Death wiped out over a third of Europe's population and it took 400 years to grow back to its former level. There were no news flashes or video coverage, just the word of straggling strangers of the terrors they had seen.
Think of the Ice Ages that have periodically crept across the earth's surface, wiping out hundred of species each time and forever leaving the mark of their ravages on the continents. Envision an enormous meteor crashing into our planet, leaving a killing residue of dust that blotted out the sun's rays for decades, destroying the dinosaurs that had dominated the landscape for 100,000 years of endless summer.
Our spaceship earth is a living, breathing and highly unstable vessel. It explodes, erupts, and trembles on its own timetable, far removed from the brief memories of mankind.
The forces of nature are doing what they have always done. There are just so many more of us to get in the way and so many more to bear witness to the recurring catastrophes.

heroes needed in times of need
Natural disasters have devastated natural landscapes and the lives of millions in recent years. While technology is aiding us in keeping proactive in avoiding our presence in times of these traumatic events, many people are being seriously injured. The aftermath of these events has raised the need for professionals such as emergency medical technicians and trained nurses.
Extreme times call for extraordinary training and measures. Local communities cannot rely on a 'normal' chain of events to follow in the wake of a natural disaster. Trained Disaster Management professionals are needed in exigent times at the local, national, and international level.
Professionals are needed for analyzing risks, implementing strategies to reduce risks, planning and instilling public education, response to crisis events, coordinating with pertinent agencies, etc.
Disaster Management professionals organize medical relief as well as search and rescue operations, provide water and food supplies, set up emergency shelter, etc. They work closely with organizations like the Red Cross to provide optimal care for emergency situations. Hospital based professionals plan, train, direct doctor efforts, educate nurses, and help all other health care providers.
There is a great deal of opportunity available to those who study disaster management and emergency management. Classes are available online for those interested. Well paid jobs are available in hospitals, police agencies, fire departments, and in local and government agencies. Many private companies that deal with hazardous chemicals, industrial machinery, or are engaged in other exigent situations need educated professionals for consultants or on-site jobs.
Disaster Management demands the dedication of knowledgeable and noble professionals and is a most rewarding duty to fulfill. Those interested should seek out available training courses at local schools or online.
Nurses and EMTs are much needed in all parts of the world because of the vital nature of their jobs and the chance of disaster striking at any time and place. The advances of technology has only increased the need for more medical professionals to develop, implement, and teach others to use the technology.

Do You Have A Skills To Survive?Camping?Outdoor?
As our society becomes more and more technological, cold and urban, ever more people are starting to feel the urge to get away from it all, take a break from modern life and go back to the way things were for our ancestors. Perhaps this explains the rising popularity of camping holidays, the ultimate experience of going back to nature and living in the wild, with only a basic structure for shelter and a fire for cooking.
Of course, lots of people don't exactly do it that way. Camper vans are popular, as is 'car camping', and all sorts of electrical appliances have been adapted for camping – there are even camp microwaves.
Most people consider at least modern toilets and showers to be a campsite necessity, regardless of whether it's really true to the spirit of the activity. Camping doesn't really have to be an outdoors thing if you don't want it to be, as many camper vans aren't that much different to houses on wheels, and many families stay in them for a large part of their holiday. It's all about doing what you feel comfortable with.
For hardcore campers, though, the truest form of camping is camping which teaches survival skills, such as eating-wild caught food, finding your way around by the position of the sun and making fire. You would have to be very hungry to eat the animals that can be found in the woods of most countries, however, and for this reason camping with facilities and packed food is far more popular.
Most campsites are in woods or open fields, and are often publically-owned – if you want to find one, they should be clearly marked on maps for walkers and on road signs for cars. It's up to you what you take with you, but most people will prefer to have at least a tent, sleeping bags, torches, and either a tool for making firewood or portable oven where campfires aren't allowed.

Are You Prepared For Natural Disaster?
With the various types of natural disasters that have taken place in recent years, many people have started to realize that they may not be prepared for such events to take place. While no one wants to think it can happen to them, we have all seen the footage of Hurricane Katrina and it was a reality that this type of natural disaster is something that does happen to real people. Even the fires spreading out of control in California remind us of the types of natural disasters that can take place.
It is important to pay close attention to the warnings that hopefully will be broadcast on TV and the internet if a natural disaster is possible. It is unbelievable the number of people that ignore this information. If you are asked to evacuate the area do so as quickly and calmly as you can. Rescue efforts may not be available for those that remain behind. It is a good idea to have a battery powered radio that you can carry with you to continue listening to the instructions as you are traveling.
You should have an emergency supply kit on hand at all times just in case you do happen to be in a location where a natural disaster happens. Bottled water and canned foods can be stored for long periods of time. You want enough for each family member for at least five days.
Should you have to remain on your own for a few days until rescue teams can reach you these items will help you to survive. The food in your refrigerator can spoil if the power goes down which is common after a natural disaster. Make sure you keep medications on hand for those that need them on a regular basis.
If you have small children in the home make sure you have the necessary supplies on hand for them. Stocking up on personal items such as diapers, toilet paper, and toothpaste can help you to stay healthy during a natural disaster. Since you may be without power for several days you will want to have lanterns and flashlights readily available.
A small first aid kit with essential items can be useful because you never know when someone will be injured as a result of a natural disaster. Do your best to clean the injury and prevent infection until proper medical care can be received for the individual. Many people worry about their pets during a natural disaster but you may not be able to keep them with you during that time. If possible though store food for them as well so that you won't be sharing the food you stored for your family with them.
A natural disaster can be very scary for everyone, but especially for children. Make sure that everyone is able to get plenty of rest and that children are allowed to openly share their feelings. Too many parents think it is best not to tell them what is going on but that tends to make them more afraid as they definitely know something is taking place around them.
Hopefully you will never have to experience a natural disaster but it is wise to be prepared. Having the essential items in place that your will need can make the difference between your survival after the event takes place. It is a good idea to practice emergency procedures for natural disasters with your family as well.

Affiliate Marketing Tips That Will Boost Your Profits
You can profit greatly from a successful web marketing venture, if
you focus your energy, develop a plan that works and stick with it.
Information is key to making money through affiliate marketing. The
following article includes some really helpful tips to get you going.
Every single affiliate you choose should be in your site’s niche. This helps you also build traffic and a better understanding of who your audience is.
Using text services will help affiliates to do well and earn commissions. Although this is a new service, many affiliates are already using it to communicate with customers as well as promote new affiliate offers and products.
Consider joining an affiliate network. These networks connect you
with relevant advertisers. Good webmasters work only with networks that
are reputable, so using such a tool can help you meet that standard.
Promoting products from well-established, reputable affiliate networks
will increase your readers’ trust in your site.
Don’t underestimate the power of a link’s visual location on your website. Check it out at different parts of the page like the top, middle or even the bottom. Don’t change the article itself, but only the location of the affiliate link within that article.
Sometimes affiliates receive requests to fill via email and then waste time by double- and even triple-checking the emails. If you condense the points included in the emails into an easy to read text document, you’ll end up bettering your productivity. Save yourself time by referring to this document.
Often, communicating not only protects, but also strengthens, the bond with affiliate partners. Frequent communication with your partners is essential to generating revenue. The affiliates who bring you the most business are your most prized partners, and you should do whatever it takes to nurture and strengthen your partnership with them.
Tracking systems that are owned by a vendor can be a scam. If you use a tracking system with a proven reputation you can avoid most of these problems.
You should promote services or items in which you are confident. The reputation of your business – and yourself – rests on the products you choose to endorse. Your customers build confidence and trust in your company based on the products that you promote. Promoting products that are of good quality and affordable will win you customers and keep the ones you have.
